Undergraduate Programmes - Day school/Night school

 

Major 

All students must choose a field as their major studies which can be instrumental, compositional or vocal.

 

Minor

Students may choose a minor instrument besides their major ones. For non-piano-major students, the minor instrument has to be the piano. There is no restriction for piano-major students.

German conversation

 

Musical Forms and Analysis Lesson】

The course is about basic and advanced studies of music structure, counterpoint and harmony. Also, students will learn every details about compositions of different styles, by different composors, during different periods through analyzing.

 

Instrumentation

An introduction about the theoratical aspects of all orchestral instruments.

 

Counterpoint

To get acquented with the counterpoint skill from learning the basic concept, and writing the voicing lines. This course is a training of strict counterpoint which is based on the five steps of J. J.Fux's theory, 1. one note against one note”, 2. one note against two notes”, 3. one note against four notes”, 4. suspension , 5. florid counterpoint. The principle is to study the composition rules in sixteenth century, especially toward the works by Palestrina.

 

Chamber Music

Taught by the professors from different fields, students will learn the art of ensemble through rehearsals, coaching, juries, and competitions.

 

Orchestration

The course talks about the features of all string and wind instruments, things like the sound effect about different combination, for composition use.

 

World Music

Introducing music of the world, this course provides various musical experiences on both notated and un-notated traditions from different areas and nations. Students are required to study and analyze the structures and formations of every kind of music, so they can understand music in the content of humanity, add dimensions to both musical appreciation and creation, broaden their artistic visions, and multiplied their knowledge and sensation in exploring the sounding expression of human minds.

 

Harmony (I)(II)】

To learn both theorectical and compositional aspects of Harmony and to be able to independently conduct harmonic analyses. 

 

Improvisation

Through the study of jazz improvisation in different time periods, students will develop individual and group improvisation skills. 

 

【Full Score Reading

The course enables the students to play all clefs (the treble-clef, the C-clef and the bass-clef), the actual pitch of the transposing instruments, as well as music scores. From reading the score, students will be familiar with different kinds of compositions, such as duet, trio, string quartet, brass quintet and symphonies.

 

Opera Workshop

The subject of the course is to assist the students to get the concepts about Western operas and excute them. With real stage performances, students will gain experiences from this integrated art. The main content includes music appreciaton and real opera production.

 

Computer Music

To develop the ability to write score, to compose and to record with computers.

 

Keyboard Harmony

To elevate Piano-major students' ability through practical experiences, composition techniques and the use of harmonies. 

 

Music Aesthetics

This course is designed to guide the students to the aesthetics of music, to discuss the ideas of different music genres, yet to enjoy the music.

 

Piano Pedagogy

Provide students with educational theories and actual practice into Piano Pedagogy.

 

Musical Acting

In order to create the authentic "musical of Taiwan", the course combines NY broadway's and local culture, from people's point of view, to create the play that represents the real life of Taiwan through new music, dance, play, and literature. 

 

Basic Conducting

Course target: To show the basic conducting skills for beginners. Course content: An introduction of basic conducting skills, score reading, and practical training of real ensemble conducting. 

 

Percussion Ensemble

Develop Percussion-majored students' ensemble reportoires and abilities.

 

Service Learning

An internship for students who are interested in specific professional fields. 

 

Wind Repertoire and Performance Class

Besides the analysis of important wind repertoire, the course also talks about the practical issues that often happen during real performances and the solutions. 

 

Piano Accompanying

Developing score-reading ability to instantly play at sight or transpose into other keys. Developing a pianist's ability to cooperate with other instrumentalists or vocalists with balanced accompaniment and appropriate interactions. 

 

Introduction to Music

This theory class will be taught in either English or both English and Chinese. The students will learn English in four aspects: listening, speaking, writing, and reading. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the purpose of the class is to promote English studies as an international language. Moreover, this class will help those who plan to study abroad and are interested in teaching music in English. 

 

Chinese Art Song

To elevate students' interpretation of Chinese Art Songs through apreciation of Chinese literature and different vocal tones. 

 

Western Art Song

The study of this course includes an introduction of the history of art songs in Italy and Germany, during Baroque, Classic and Romantic eras. Performance and analysis of the important literature will also be included. 

 

String Literature

The course discusses string instruments' history, theory and practice through discussion, appreciation and interpretation.

This course incorporates the following four areas:

1. The origin of the film scoring.

2. The history of Film Music

3. Introduction of Film Music Composers

4. Analysis of Film Scoring

 

Music Thesis Writing

The purpose of the course is to assist the students to establish the skilsl of doing researches as well as writing thesis. 

 

Comprehensive Musicianship (I)(II)

This course incorporates the following five areas:

 

1.Aural and Written Dictation:

Utilizing multiple musical instruments to dictate J.S. Bach's chorales. Through sustained aural and written exercises, this helps the students to enhance the listening capabilities.

 

2.Sight-Singing:

Sight-singing practice of Bachs Chorales at different staves. Some teaching materials will be prepared by the instructor.

 

3. Experience Teaching and Lesson Planning: the students will select their preferred teaching practices or design their own teaching plans. This teaching concept is for the purpose of fostering seed teachers. 

4. Score Reading Practice.

5. Analysis through Listening Comprehension 

 

Harpsichord Literature 

Students who major in piano or other instruments can elaborate the rich music world of harpsichord via this elective course. They will learn the actual sound effects of the compositions, the uniqueness of the instrument, and the insights of the music. This course will help the students to develop thorough performing ability and adequat interpretation of the music.

 

Chorus -Mixed Choir 

This course will help the singers to develop the ability of choir singing. 

 

Commercial Music Arrangement

This course will assist the students to do commercial music with classical insights.

 

Orchestral Excerpts

An introduction about orchestral excerpts, this course provides a basic understanding of the orchestra playing as well as helping the students to prepare the future orchestra auditions.

 

Alexander Technique I

An introduction to Alexander Technique which allows the students to understand their own body and muscle through the combination of physiology. Students can also apply it to their daily practice and performance to avoid any injuries. 

 

Ensemble -Symphony Orchestra

The target is to develop an awareness of each player's responsibilities and have it benefit the music. Course content: To understand each role and its changes in an ensemble according to the factors of different seating, the various styles of the music, and so on. Course Purpose: To let each player fit in the section immediately, and becomes an initiative and responsible performer.

Through the training of bow techniques, tone quality, pitch precision, as well as cooperation among instruments, the course helps the students to develop the ability to play in string ensembles. 

 

History of Western Music (I)(II)】

The course introduces the history of western music, focusing on its development as an art and its evolution of various styles. For students who aims for a professional career, this course adds a broad knowledge of western history of musical art, a deep understanding of humanity, and a sound base for academic research. Readings of literature and analysis on music are required, while important persons, events, theories, works, techniques, styles are also studied through lectures, discussions, reports, and presentations.

 

Introduction to Music Therapy

This course shows the students the auxiliary application of the music therapy for treating various diseases. The learning of the skills will also be strengthened.

 

French and Chinese Diction 

The course provides the methods to pronounce French and Chinese in a correct way.

 

Italian and German Diction

Practical Training

To strengthen students' career development and promote students' competitiveness through a series of events and practical experience in theory application, observation and practice in related fields of expertise.

 

Introduction to Instrument repair 

By exploring the construction and materials of the instruments, students will learn how to maintain and repair their instruments. Students will also learn to use simple tools on basic instrument repairs. The purpose of this course is to teach musicians how to understand and make right judgments on diverse problems when playing the instruments. And most of all, how to solve the problems correctly. 

 

Piano Tuning and Repair 

The course helps the students to understand the structure and the features of the piano in different time periods, to get familiar with the string striking system including the strings, the sticks and the bridges, along with the operation mechanism, the functions of each pedal and resonance of the castanets and the timbre.

It also helps to enhance the hearing ability for the students in order to tell the differences among the timbres, the tones, the frequencies of the pitches, and to learn the equipments which are used to assist pitch adjustment,

as well as to learn the basic piano maintenance and repairment, such as environment humidity, string replacement, painting make-up etc. 

 

String Instrument Repairs and Manufacture

The course introduces the basic knowledge of string instruments' fabrication, structure and sound production.

 

Fundamentals of Children's Music Pedagogy

This course combines the music, dance, literature, theatre and fine arts which leads students to explore the real nature of music, develops their creativities, and experiences the educational concepts of the Orff –Schulwerk. Besides strengthening individual musical capabilities, the course also develops teaching abilities that helps students to become qualified teachers for the Orff–Schulwerk courses. 

 

Music Appreciation and Criticism in English

Music appreciation course in English. All comments, essays, projects will be conducted in English.

 

Contemporary Instrumental Performing Techniques

The course shows the non-traditional performing skills and notation for contemporary works. It is designed for all students, including instrumentalists, singers and composers.

 

Chamber Music Repertoire and Performance for Piano

Learning piano chamber music repertoire through dicussion, appreciation and interpretation.

Through the understanding of different research methods to allow students to apply them to their further academic research. 

 

Tonal Music Analysis

The course is about basic and advanced studies of tonal music structure, counterpoint and harmony. Also, students will learn every details about compositions of different styles, by different composors, during different periods through analyzing.

 

Seminar on Romantic String Music

1. Discusssion into composers, reportoires and style from Classical Era

2. Advanced knowledge into each music era and their background and styles in order to apply to intrepretation

3. Compare intrepretations through appreciation and analyses
